Therapy for Trauma in Burlington, Vermont

Trauma has a way of leaving wreckage in its path. When we go through trauma, it can leave our entire world fractured. Our sense of safety, our relationships, even our very sense of self…shattered. Many people who have experienced trauma say that where there should be wholeness, peace, and joy, those things are gone, replaced by anxiety, flashbacks, dissociation (an involuntary feeling of disconnection from the body, surroundings, or sense of self), anger, hypervigilance (being on-edge and hyper-aware of surroundings), and more.

The effects of trauma can seep into every aspect of life, disturbing sleep with nightmares and insomnia, isolating us from relationships, and causing us to feel like we are still trapped in the trauma, even though it’s in the past. Trauma is our response when we're exposed to horrible, dangerous, and or life-threatening experiences. However, in addition to these sudden, catastrophic events, many people also go through what we call "little-t traumas," which are experiences that don't meet the qualifications for an actual diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder, but still cause intense distress. These can be things that someone is repeatedly exposed to throughout life, and can stem back to childhood.

Trauma affects a person's perception of safety in the world. If you’ve lived through a traumatic experience and notice that closeness, emotional intimacy, and safety in relationships with those around you is difficult, it’s very possible that the trauma might be playing a role in these struggles.

Trauma has pervasive effects, and it is, unfortunately, not rare. But if you are reading this and recognize yourself in the experiences and symptoms described above, there is hope. Freedom from the pain and devastation of trauma is available.
